Today

I hear a soft knock on my door. I think she might be the one.

"Sarah, are you in?", she whispers.

Now I am sure she is the one. I had a feeling she was going to try and explain what happened yesterday. She has only been inside my apartment once. That day she came briefly with cookies to congratulate me on moving in. Every other time we've seen, it's been in communal places, mostly the car park.

Truth be told, I woke up this morning not wanting to know what happened anymore. I told myself I was going to pretend like I didn't hear anything.

I hear a second knock, this time, a little louder than the first. I ask, while the door is still locked, "Hey hun, yes I'm in but if you don't mind, can we speak through the door? You know social distancing and all".

I hear a sigh followed by "Can I call you instead? I don't want anyone hearing what we are talking about." Perfect, that works for me, I tell her and wait for her call.

Precisely a minute after, my phone vibrates beside me and I stare down at it for a few seconds. I'm contemplating whether to pick up or not. I really feel like I don't want to know what happened anymore. It's really not my business but then again, I'm slightly curious and I also just told her to call me.

"Hi hun, sorry about earlier. You know you're always welcome at my place except for this corona thing", I say as I pick up.

"That's fine, Sarah. You don't have to explain yourself. It was my mistake. Anyway, pause I'm sure you know what I want to talk about another pause the thing is deep breath yesterday was my birthday and.." she says midway.

"And what?” I press. Ignoring the fact that I forgot to wish her happy birthday yesterday.

"He he he showed up with a tiny box!!!", she sobs.

The Nigerian in me is tempted to ask, 'is that why you were wailing like someone died yesterday?' but instead I say, "Go on."
